AWARDED DFC:

CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH-1D
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer 1 George J. Wright for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 4 August 1968. Warrant Officer Wright distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1D helicopter during a combat assault. As his ship touched down in the landing zone, it came under intense enemy automatic weapons fire, yet he successfully completed the insertion and departed. After picking up more infantrymen, he proceeded to the next landing zone and began receiving enemy automatic weapons fire from all directions. Nevertheless, Warrant Officer Wright masterfully landed in a position which enabled the infantrymen to unload safely, and which also allowed his Door Gunners to place effective fire upon enemy position. Although several enemy rounds entered the cockpit, he expertly maneuvered the ship out of the landing zone. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
