Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant (junior grade) Gregory L. Wood for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Bombardier/Navigator of jet aircraft attached to Attack Squadron Fifty-two embarked in USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-631). On 1 September 1972, Lieutenant (junior grade) Wood conducted a most successful single plane, low-level strike against the Vu Chau Railroad Siding located along the important northeast rail line connecting the Peoples Republic of China with Hanoi, North Vietnam. This area is one of the most heavily defended in North Vietnam. He was tasked with a dual mission of mining the rail line and attacking the rail siding. Despite extremely intense anti-aircraft artillery fire, he flawlessly executed a system weapons attack seeding the rail line and attacking the siding resulting in multiple secondary explosions. His courageous efforts were instrumental in interdicting the enemy's flow of war materials. Lieutenant (junior grade) Wood's outstanding airmanship, exemplary courage and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
