Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Donald H Wolfe, First Lieutenant, 575th Bombardment Squadron, 391st Bombardment Group for distinguished achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European Theater of Operations. On 20 June 1944, while approaching the bomb run his aircraft was hit by a burst of flak badly damaging his aircraft. Displaying great courage and determination, Lieutenant Wolfe decided to continue on behind the formation and drop his bombs on the assigned objective. Upon reaching the target he observed the formation making a turn to come in for a second run on the target. Although loss of altitude prevented him from going over the assigned target, he displayed great skill and aerial proficiency by dropping his bombs on a nearby enemy airdrome with devastating effect. The courage displayed by Lieutenant Wolfe in returning to base an aircraft so badly damaged as to have warranted its abandonment reflect great credit to both himself and to the Army Air Forces.
