Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Richard P. Wolfe, Captain Signal Corps, 220th Aviation Company (Surveillance Airplane) 8 August 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Wolfe distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while flying a light observation aircraft on a visual reconnaissance mission in the demilitarized zone. While firing marking rockets into an enemy bunker complex, he was taken under intense automatic weapons fire. Although his aircraft was damaged by the fire, he courageously remained in the area to direct Air Force fighter strikes and to adjust artillery onto the enemy. His cool professionalism and courage enabled him to prevent further damage to his aircraft and were instrumental to the success of the mission. His actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
