Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer 1 Harold J. Wilson for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Wilson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while flying the wing ship of a light fire team of gunships covering the extraction of a reconnaissance team in the vicinity of Duc Co. His ship came under intense enemy fire, forcing the aircraft to land in a nearby field. Throughout the entire emergency landing his calmness and coolness helped to relax his crew, even though his door gunner had received fatal wounds. Once on the ground he directed his crew to destroy all radios and other classified material aboard the ship. While the recovery ship was on final approach, he courageously stood up in the open field to wave the helicopter off, although his crew was receiving heavy automatic weapons fire. The rescue helicopter landed safely on the next pass, and everyone was evacuated. Warrant Officer Wilson's flying ability and calm performance on the ground showed great professionalism and outstanding leadership. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
