Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross (Fourth Oak Leaf Cluster) for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Chief Warrant Officer Williamson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the lead pilot in a light fire team of helicopter gunships. While on a visual reconnaissance mission, the lead aero scout came under heavy automatic weapons fire from fortified bunkers and crashed twenty meters from the enemy positions. Chief Warrant Officer Williamson immediately began sustained and accurate rocket fire to protect the injured crewmembers trapped in the burning wreckage. His suppression allowed the command and control aircraft to land near the downed aircraft to extract the seriously wounded crew. Throughout the extraction and afterwards, Chief Warrant Officer Williamson made repeated attacks on the enemy positions. Through his undaunted courage and complete devotion to duty, Chief Warrant Officer Williamson was highly instrumental in the success of the mission. His outstanding flying ability and professional aerial actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. John A. Williamson is a member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society.
