CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam

Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert M. Williams for distinguishing himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an A-37 pilot in Southeast Asia on 9 April 1972. On that date, Captain Williams led his flight in support of an allied force located along Route 13, Binh Long Province, Republic of Vietnam. Despite extremely poor weather conditions, minimum separation between friendly and hostile forces, and intense antiaircraft fire, Captain Williams made repeated low level passes across the target area delivering his ordnance with pinpoint accuracy. These actions were the decisive factor in halting the opposing assault and instrumental in saving many friendly lives. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Williams reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
