Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Robert J. Bratkovic, Warrant Officer, WO1, 135th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 21 March 1971 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Bratkovic distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of the lead gunship of a fire team which was operating in the U Minh Forest, Kien Giang Province. His tremendous skill as an aviator enabled him to successfully avoid the intensive enemy fire for fifteen minutes while pinpointing the enemy positions. After being forced to leave the area, as he was unable to return the enemy’s fire, he exposed himself during low level flight in order to determine the enemy’s strength in the area which he thought best for the flight to enter. His prowess and tremendous courage is further shown by his willingly entering an area of extreme enemy fire to properly protect the slicks which were inserting troops into the landing zone. Through his excellent coverage of the slicks and by continually exposing himself to intensive enemy fire, he was able to give them such complete coverage that not a single aircraft took a hit. His outstanding flying ability and complete devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
