Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Michael E. Wiklanski for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Wiklanski distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Flight Lead in the lift section performing insertions in the northern portion of the U Minh Forest. The aero scout team located enemy personnel concealed in thick underbrush. They immediately placed fire on the enemy and marked their position for gunship strikes. As the assault aircraft raked the area with devastating fire, the Air Mission Commander decided to insert a reaction force. At the termination of the air strikes, the lift element initiated their approach to the landing zone. As the flight touched down, enemy personnel concealed in the surrounding tree lines unleashed a murderous barrage of fire. The second aircraft in the formation sustained hits, spun out of control and crashed into the landing zone. Knowing that the downed crew would be in desperate need of medical assistance, Warrant Officer Wiklanski courageously positioned his aircraft as close as possible to the downed helicopter while using his aircraft as a shield for the downed ship. Warrant Officer Wiklanski held his dangerous position until all the injured crew was safely aboard his aircraft. When all the injured were aboard, he expeditiously medevac'd the injured personnel to the nearest medical facility. Chief Warrant Officer Wiklanski's uncommon valor, calm professionalism under fire and devotion to duty were responsible for the success of this perilous rescue. His actions were keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
