Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One John C. Brandt for heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 25 February 1969. Warrant Officer Brandt distinguished himself while serving as a pilot of a CH-47 helicopter during an emergency resupply mission and medical evacuation. During the early morning on the cited date, Fire Support Base Russell, near Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam, came under heavy attack by enemy sappers and was in urgent need of emergency resupply and medical evacuation. Despite extremely bad weather, occasional enemy small arms fire, and mechanical difficulties, Warrant Officer Brandt was able to complete the mission, landing in a zone which was extremely small, cluttered, and damaged by the sapper attack. Through his courage and sound judgment, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Warrant Officer Brandt’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
