Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Daniel C. Brandenstein for extraordinary achievement while participating in space flight as the Commander of the Shuttle Orbiter Discovery on 17 to 24 June 1985. Captain Brandenstein's outstanding leadership and exceptional flying skills were essential to the successful accomplishment of the mission. His response to unexpected events during the rendezvous and recovery of Spartan enabled the effective recovery of that valuable experiment package. Additinally, the successful execution of the flight control tests and crosswind landing contributed to future capabilities of the Space Shuttle. Captain Brandenstein's distinguished achievements, skilled airmanship, and unfailing devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
