Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Michael M. Welch for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-123K Loadmaster in Southeast Asia on the night of 25 December 1970. On that date, Sergeant Welch flew an extremely hazardous mission of unarmed night reconnaissance, flare support, and forward air control against hostile vehicles carrying vital supplies and ammunition. With unwavering calmness and courage, and showing great determination in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, he was instrumental in pressing the attack to its successful conclusion. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Welch reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
