2.)
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George B. Watts for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52D Aircraft Commander, 307th Strategic Wing, U-Tapao Airfield, Thailand on 7 May 1973. On that date, Captain Watts' aircraft experienced complete electrical power failure while flying a critical bombing mission in Southeast Asia. Although his aircraft was the lead aircraft of a cell of three B-52D aircraft flying in severe weather, a successful lead aircraft change was accomplished just prior to the target. With only a very limited supply of emergency electrical power available, Captain Watts and his crew were able to recover a minimum amount of vital navigational equipment. Captain Watts' outstanding knowledge of his aircraft and its system played an important part in the safe recovery of a valuable crew and aircraft. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Watts reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
