Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Donald M. Waltz for extraordinary achievement while serving as Pilot of the lead airplane of bombardment formations composed of B-17 aircraft on missions over Germany, 4 October 1944, 14 February 1945, and 15 February 1945. On these operations, Captain Waltz demonstrated exceptional ability and resolution in attacking important enemy objectives. On 4 October 1944 two engines of the airplane which he was piloting became inoperative. Evincing a high degree of flying proficiency, Captain Waltz left formation and completed the arduous flight to home base. On 14 February 1945, extensive damage was sustained by the aircraft. In the face of numerous difficulties and hazards, Captain Walt competently accomplished the assigned mission. On 15 February 1945 this officer performed his duties with distinction, contributing materially to the success achieved by the formation in which he flew. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by Captain Waltz on these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
