Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Ronald L. Walters for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Walters distinguished himself by valorous actions on 3 March 1971 in the Republic of Vietnam. While flying as air artillery support for an urgent extraction mission in heavily-infested enemy territory, Lieutenant Walters observed the extraction aircraft come under enemy fire. With compete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Walters unhesitatingly engaged the enemy emplacements with devastating aerial rocketry and cannon fire. His courageous efforts and professional tactics of aerial warfare were instrumental in the successful accomplishment of the extraction mission. Lieutenant Walter's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
