Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain James M. Walker for extraordinary heroism and gallantry while participating in aerial flight. Captain Walker distinguished himself by heroism in action on 16 July 1967 while serving as a helicopter Pilot during an aerial surveillance mission near An Khe, Republic of Vietnam. On this date, when his helicopter came under intense and highly accurate hostile fire and was hit several times, Captain Walker attempted to contact aerial rocket artillery helicopters. Unable to make radio contact, Captain Walker elected to attack the enemy positions with his door gunners. Observing several enemy soldiers, Captain Walker directed his crewmembers to fire on these enemy positions. Continuing his attacks on the hostile emplacements, Captain Walker inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy force. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
