Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Robert C. Walch, Second Lieutenant Infantry, United States Army, Republic of Vietnam, for heroism while participating in aerial flight. Lieutenant Walch distinguished himself by heroic action against a hostile force on 30 August 1963, while participating in a helicopter rescue operation in the Republic of Vietnam. Immediately upon seeing a CH-21 helicopter crash, communist Viet Cong forces opened fire at the downed aircraft. Realizing there were no combat troops aboard any of the aircraft to secure the area, Lieutenant Walch landed his aircraft at the crash site. Although his aircraft was taken under heavy enemy fire, and hit several times, Lieutenant Walch successfully completed his portion of the rescue operation. As a result of his rapid decision and complete disregard for his own personal safety, the lives of the American crew aboard the downed aircraft were saved, and recovery of the weapons, ammunition and equipment aboard was made possible. Lieutenant Walch's actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
