CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Lawrence T. Wade, III for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an Aircraft Commander of a B-52 Aircraft near Dong Hoi, Republic of Vietnam, on 2 July 1972. On that date, despite multiple engine failures on climbout and severe degradation of aircraft performance, Captain Wade was able to climb to cruising altitude and proceed to his assigned contingency target. Displaying outstanding airmanship and courage while flying a severely performance limited aircraft, Captain Wade was able to penetrate the hostile defenses, defying intense barrages of hostile antiaircraft fire and engagements with surface to air missiles, and successfully strike the hostile target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Wade reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
