Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David K. Vaughan for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as C-130E Aircraft Commander near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 4 February 1968. On that date, Captain Vaughan was flying a vital combat essential support mission against an armed unfriendly ground force. Captain Vaughan delivered an urgently required load of ammunition to the United States Marine base at Khe Sanh, in the face of known adverse and hazardous conditions, including hostile small arms and mortar fire. Captain Vaughan's skillful piloting procedures prevented the loss of his aircraft and the lives of his crew members while effecting the safe landing and expeditions offload of his cargo. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Vaughan reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
