Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant James P. VanDuzee for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving aboard an attack helicopter, supporting friendly troops in heavy contact with enemy forces. On a reconnaissance of the landing zone, they became the target of anti-aircraft fire. With a great deal of skill, determination, and bravery, they immediately placed suppressive fire on the insurgents' weapons. Courageously making pass after pass, they raked the enemy positions with mini-gun fire until all return fire ceased. With complete and total disregard for their own safety, they exposed themselves to the vicious enemy fire in an attempt to divert the intense fire, as the troop transports landed. Thinking only of the welfare of the downed crew, they circled over the downed aircraft at low altitudes to discourage the superior enemy forces from over running the downed crew. They then provided aerial support for the medevac aircraft, as it went in to pick up the survivors. Their actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
