CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  WWII

Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 29 July 1944, Lit. Boyd was a member of a flight of P-47 type aircraft to bomb a highway and railroad bridge in Milan, Italy, area. Flying through a curtain of light, medium and intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, Lt. Boyd scored direct bomb hits on the bridge, seriously damaging it and destroying a large enemy bus filled with enemy personnel. After completing his mission, Lt. Boyd continued to strafe enemy airdromes in the vicinity at tree top level through a thick haze under a complete cloud cover, accounting for the destruction of six enemy airplanes on the ground out of a total of 23 destroyed by his flight, and damaging and probably destroying five others. The high professional skill and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon Lt. Boyd and the Armed Forces of the United States.
