2.)
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Jimmy D. Turk for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52D Radar Navigator, 307th Strategic Wing, U-Tapao Air Field, Thailand on 18 September 1971. On that date, Major Turk's aircraft was cell lead on a high priority mission against a highly defended re-supply and staging area along a confirmed enemy infiltration route in the Demilitarized Zone, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. Near the target area severe weather was encountered and Major Turk, as cell lead, vectored the cell safely through, in spite of malfunctioning radar equipment. In the target area the cell was continually illuminated by a hostile surface-to-air missile radar. Disregarding his own safety, Major Turk successfully directed the release of all heavy ordnance directly on target, materially reducing hostile pressure on friendly forces in the region. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Turk reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
