Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Steven E. Bowman for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-40 Pilot in Southeast Asia on 2 June 1966. On that date, Lieutenant Bowman attacked a hostile force that had pinned down friendly troops. With complete disregard for his personal safety and in the face of extremely heavy ground fire, Lieutenant Bowman unhesitatingly dove at the hostile positions. His devastating attack destroyed three automatic weapon positions and diverted the hostile fire so that the friendly forces could reposition themselves to a less vulnerable location. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Bowman reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
