Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Douglas J. Tollin, First Lieutenant, Transportation Corps, United States Army, 205th Aslt Spt Hel Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 26 August 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: First Lieutenant Tollin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a CH-47A helicopter during a vital troop reinforcement mission to a small isolated Special Forces outpost near the Cambodian border. Even though his aircraft was damaged while unloading the reinforcing troops by several exploding, enemy mortar rounds, First Lieutenant Tollin expertly and efficiently commanded his crew during the perilous situation. Coordinating with ground medical and fire prevention teams at the secured landing zone, he was able to guide his stricken helicopter to safety. Even though both aircraft engines were streaming fuel during flight, and the number two engine oil pressure dropped, he skillfully flew the crippled ship to a secure area. Through his sterling performance, he saved the lives of several severely wounded soldiers that he had evacuated. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
