Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Warren S. Thornley for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during the periods indicated. Flying in transport type aircraft from bases in China and Burma, they took part in 300 or more hours of operational and combat flight. Their missions included the delivery of vital supplies and personnel to advanced units which were practically inaccessible by land routes. They dropped supplies to units which could not be reached by ordinary air supply, often flying near enemy territory to do so. Their planes were unarmed and heavy with cargo, but they braved probable fire from the enemy and weather which was often unfavorable. The courage and determination demonstrated by these officers and enlisted men reflect high credit upon themselves and upon the Army Air Forces.
