Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant Francis C. Bowen for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a C-130 Loadmaster at Katum, Republic of Vietnam on 21 August 1968. On that date, Sergeant Bowen was required to fly an important resupply mission that entailed an approach at low altitude and slow airspeed over hostile forces through intense and accurate ground fire. Sergeant Bowen was severely wounded in the leg during this critical period. He then exhibited great determination by asking that the approach be continued and a successful drop was made. His courage under hostile fire, his complete disregard for his own safety, and his heroic action were an inspiration to his fellow crew members. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Bowen reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
