Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to John A. Synowsky, Captain, Field Artillery, United States Army Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 165th Aviation Group (Combat), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 17 April 1970 to 4 September 1970. For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Synowsky distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as the intelligence officer for the 165th Aviation Group. Flying frequent missions to provide vital reconnaissance of isolated areas and to estimate their feasibility as proposed sites for deployment of group elements, he braved hazardous weather conditions, rugged terrain and the ever present danger of enemy fire during his missions in these hostile areas. Conducting thorough reconnaissance of vital areas, he provided precise and detailed information which greatly affected top level decisions concerning troop deployments. Through the vital information he provided during the Cambodian Campaign, the effectiveness of Allied radar was greatly enhanced along the border. Through his courage, sound judgement and aviation expertise, he has contributed immeasurably to the combat success of Army Aviation against an elusive and determined enemy. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
