Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Kevin J. Sweeney for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander, KC-135E, during Operation Desert Storm on 6 February 1991. On that date, Major Sweeney successfully piloted his KC-135E to a safe landing after two engines completely separated from the aircraft following a violent encounter with wake turbulence from another large aircraft. Faced with landing a severely damaged aircraft with permanent loss of major aircraft systems, he expertly directed the actions of his crew to effect the safe recovery of both his crew and their aircraft. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Sweeney reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
