CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: CH-47A
Citation: 1.) The United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Joseph L. Sturdevant, Jr., for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Sturdevant distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander and Mission Commander of a flight of 3 CH-47A helicopters conducting an emergency battery airlift into an area south of DaNang. Captain Sturdevant was flying lead ship and upon first lift into the landing zone, he came under enemy small arms fire from three sides. After successfully depositing his load with maximum celerity, he orbited the area calling in gunship airstrikes and directing the remaining two CH-47's into the landing zone. While orbiting, he placed effective suppressive fire on the enemy from his aircraft. Captain Sturdevant's calm professional ability, leadership and courage undoubtedly saved many American lives by contributing greatly to the reinforcement of the area south of DaNang during the Tet Offensive. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
