Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert H. Botnen for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Botnen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a command and control transport helicopter. As Mission Commander, he was leading elements of an air cavalry troop when he was given an urgent mission to aid and direct the rescue of a long-range patrol engaged in heavy contact with a large sized enemy force patrol. Several unsuccessful attempts to extract the patrol had been made by other units, and Captain Botnen arrived on station, as a lift helicopter with the patrol aboard received intense enemy fire and crashed back into the landing zone. He took command of the situation, directing his light observation helicopters to fly protection over the downed personnel, as he directed the gunships to put down suppressive fire around the landing zone. He coordinated with the Air Force for air strikes and medevac helicopters, as he exposed his aircraft to hostile fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he utilized his unit to their full capabilities to provide the maximum of protection, as he flew directly over the hostile area. His determination and professional decisions resulted in the safe extraction of the long range patrol, the crew of the downed helicopter and the neutralization of a large enemy force. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
