The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert S. Strang extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander near the Special Forces Camp at Dak Seang, Republic of Vietnam on 4 April 1970. On that date, Lieutenant Strang willfully volunteered to fly an emergency re-supply airdrop into the besieged Civilian Irregular Defense Group Camp. During the low-altitude, low-airspeed maneuver over the camp, Lieutenant Strang's aircraft was hit repeatedly by hostile fire, causing extensive aircraft damage. Despite the heavy fire, Lieutenant Strang displayed exceptional courage under adverse conditions and completed a one hundred percent recoverable airdrop. The successful defense of the camp is a direct result of the valiant efforts of Lieutenant Strang. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Strang reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Lieutenant Strang elected to fly an emergency resupply mission in direct support of the besieged camp. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Strang successfully completed the drop while flying through heavy automatic weapons fire. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Strang reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
