Citation:  1.) The USS Lunga Point in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on March 2, 1945, Lieutenant Stowell, by observing and designating targets while a Air Coordinator, during attacks on enemy ground installations materially aided his flight in executing devasting bombing, rocket and strafing runs on enemy positions. Although confronted with a low ceiling and hazy ground conditions, he was instrumental in providing vital air support for the ground troops. His skillful airmanship in the face of hostile anti-aircraft fire and his courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement on two occasions during his 20 missions against the Japanese forces in the Okinawa area of operations in the Pacific.
