Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Louis S. Stokes for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a B-25 type aircraft. On 30 January 1944, Captain Stokes flew in an attack upon enemy positions near Anzio, Italy, in close support of Allied ground forces. Upon the approach to the target, intense anti-aircraft fire enveloped the formation, damaging twenty-one of the thirty-three bombers on the mission and destroying one engine and the hydraulic system of Captain Stokes’ plane. Displaying utmost determination and superior flying ability, he maintained his crippled aircraft in formation for the bomb run, thereby enabling his bombardier to register upon the objective with devastating effect. Forced to leave formation upon withdrawal from the target, Captain Stokes skillfully maneuvering in vigorous evasive action through continued enemy ground fire, piloted the disabled bomber to his base and landed safely without injury to his crew. His selfless devotion to duty and outstanding proficiency as a combat Pilot reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
