Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights from 2 November 1956 to 4 February 1957. During this period, Captain Stern performed, under exceptional conditins, flights which were of the greatest importance to the United States Air Force. The effectiveness and courage exhibited by him in the accomplishment of these missions, under extremely hazardous flight conditins, ably demonstrated Captain Stern's outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty. In the performance of these missions, he has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
