CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam

Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Gary Spooner, Chief Warrant Officer, W2, United States Army, Troop C, 7th Armored Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 11 May 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Chief Warrant Officer Spooner distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a lift helicopter during recovery of a helicopter crew. He held his aircraft at a steady hover above the trees to insert infantry troops for rescue of the wounded crew while enemy gunners continuously concentrated heavy automatic weapons fire on the aircraft. It was again necessary for him to return to the same area to extract the infantry troops and crew. Chief Warrant Officer Spooner hovered his aircraft above the trees for the rope ladder extraction despite the intense enemy fire. His performance and outstanding flying ability were responsible for the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
