Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Ronald K. Spearman for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Spearman distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 February 1969 while serving as a Pilot with the 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, on a reconnaissance mission near Fire Support Base Moore. After responding to a call for aid from a friendly patrol which was under attack from a numerically superior hostile force, Captain Spearman courageously landed his craft in an extremely small landing zone under intense hostile fire to enable the battalion commander and artillery liaison officer to join the ground forces. He then took to the air and braved the fusillade of fire for an extended period to direct reinforcements into the area and pinpoint enemy targets. Captain Spearman's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
