Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 Pilot near Saigon, Republic of Vietnam on 14 October 1966. On that date, Major Sorrel was leading a combat support mission which went to the aid of a friendly force engaged and pinned down by hostile troops. In conditions of poor visibility and in the face of intense hostile ground fire, Major Sorrel aggressively led his flight against the unfriendly positions exposing himself repeatedly to the withering ground fire. As a result of Major Sorrel's superior combat leadership, the support he provided enabled friendly troops to recover and take the initiative without further losses. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by major Sorrel reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
