Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Edmond L. Soliday for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Soliday distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Maintenance and Test Pilot. When a helicopter gunship made an emergency landing due to control difficulties, he voluntarily flew to the scene and, despite imminent hostile fire, he checked the downed ship for major damage. Since the area was unsecure, he decided to attempt flying the crippled ship to a safer area. After a few minutes of flight, the controls of the aircraft again failed to respond correctly but, with outstanding aerial skill, he maneuvered the craft to a secure area. While approaching to land, the hydraulic system became inoperable, and he was forced to attempt an emergency landing. Utilizing his wealth of flying knowledge, he skillfully overcame the hazards of 50 foot trees surrounding the small landing zone, an inoperable hydraulic system and faulty controls to safely land the craft. Through personal courage and aerial professionalism, he single-handedly prevented this gunship from falling into enemy hands. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
