Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Francis Daniel Smithson, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 363, Marine Aircraft Group Sixteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 8 May 1967, First Lieutenant Smithson launched as Aircraft Commander of the second aircraft in a flight of two UH-34 helicopters assigned an emergency medical evacuation mission in support of Marine units at Con Thien. Arriving over the designated area, he established radio contact with the ground units and was informed that they were receiving intense fire and were being assaulted by a North Vietnamese Army force which had penetrated the perimeter and inflicted numerous casualties on the Marines. Although repeated attempts to secure a landing site had been unsuccessful and realizing that the number of casualties was increasing, he elected to land in the extremely hazardous zone. Unhesitatingly commencing his approach, he skillfully maneuvered his aircraft through a heavy volume of ·hostile fire and, upon landing, steadfastly remained in the fire-swept area for several minutes until the maximum number of casualties had been placed aboard his helicopter. After safety delivering the wounded men to a medical facility, he fearlessly returned to the area and conducted five additional evacuation missions despite the intense enemy fire directed at his aircraft. His resolute determination and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and resulted in his flight evacuating over seventy casualties. First Lieutenant Smithson’s courage, exceptional aeronautical ability and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
