Boone for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Dak To, Republic of Vietnam from 11 June 1966 to 17 June 1966. During this period, while assigned to the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division for assistance during Operation Hawthorne, Captain Boone displayed outstanding judgement and devotion to duty. On one occasion, Captain Boone, due to a malfunction in his aircraft rocket system, flew dangerously low over the hostile positions, exposing himself to intense hostile fire, and marked the target with smoke grenades. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Boone reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
