Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Michael E. Smith, Warrant Officer, WO1, United States Army, Troop E, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Smith distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 October 1970, while serving as pilot in the Republic of Vietnam. When a request was received to extract a team of rangers from an enemy infested area, Warrant Officer Smith volunteered for the mission. Despite hostile activity in the area and extremely adverse weather conditions, he successfully completed the mission. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Smith, Warrant Officer, WO1, United States Army, Troop C, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Smith distinguished himself by valorous actions on 22 January 1971, while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. While on an extraction mission, Warrant Officer Smith displayed courage and professionalism in the performance of his duties. Despite intense enemy fire, Warrant Officer Smith maneuvered his aircraft down into the pick-up zone. Not until all the wounded had been loaded on his aircraft did Warrant Officer Smith take off from the area. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
