Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Tres C. Smith for heroism while participating in aerial flight as UH-1Y Pilot, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) Afghanistan on 18 June 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Major Smith was the Pilot-In-Command and Section Leader of a flight of two UH-1Y helicopters tasked with conducting an emergency resupply of ammunition to ground forces in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Upon arrival at the landing zone, he thoroughly assessed the ground situation and directed his team where to land. Approximately 100 meters from the landing zone, Major Smith's aircraft was exposed to intense small arms, machine gun, and rocket propelled grenade fire. Despite the volume of incoming fire, Major Smith provided calm, sage guidance to both aircraft under chaotic circumstances. His selfless devotion to the welfare of his Marines and mission accomplishment in the face of danger provided critical ammunition resupply to ground forces, ensured that all supplies were delivered, and confirmed that his wingman had begun egress from the landing zone prior to his own departure. Upon egress, Major Smith's aircraft was hit several times by small arms fire, with one round penetrating his left leg, right thigh, and right arm. Although injured, Major Smith continued to provide expert direction and leadership through the join-up with his wingman, programmed the aircraft's navigation system, and directed the actions of his Marines. By his superb airmanship, inspiring courage, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Major Smith reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service
