Upon descending onto the landing zone, Specialist Smith came under heavy anti-aircraft fire from all directions. Subjecting himself to the intense barrage, he delivered accurate and devastating suppressive fire and guided his pilot onto the landing zone. As the ground element departed the aircraft, Specialist Smith provided accurate covering fire. Throughout the entire mission, he continually engaged the enemy with devastating fire. His actions were instrumental in the establishment of Fire Base Lolo. Specialist Smith's outstanding flying ability and devotion to Duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
