AWARDED DFC: 1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam
MODEL:  C-130E

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Paul S. Skabo for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130E Pilot at Kham Duc Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 20 July 1970. On that date, Captain Skabo flew a combat essential mission to deliver badly needed fuel for helicopters being used in support of combat operations at this forward operating base. Prior to landing it was necessary to shell the approach end of the runway to suppress hostile ground fire. Despite the hostile threat, numerous thunder storms in the area, mountainous terrain, and approaching darkness the landing was made and the fuel off-loaded with minimum ground time. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Skabo reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
