Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Michael A. Silva, WARRANT OFFICER WO1, USA, Company A, 123d Aviation Battalion, 23d Infantry Division, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Silva distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 March 1971 while serving as a Rotary Wing Pilot with Company A, 123d Aviation Battalion. On that date, a friendly unit was situated in its night defensive position at Firebase Maryann when it came under intense enemy mortar fire and a large, well-planned North Vietnamese Army sapper attack. The friendly element at the firebase sustained very heavy initial casualties. Upon hearing of the crisis at the firebase, Warrant Officer Silva volunteered without any hesitation to fly his craft to the battle-torn area in order to provide light for his fellow soldiers with the use of flares. Fully realizing the danger involved and flying without operable machineguns, he skillfully maneuvered his craft through the dense fog in the darkness of night to Firebase Maryann. While providing flare support for the stricken area, he monitored an urgent appeal for a medical evacuation helicopter. Upon approaching the landing zone, he received an intensive barrage of hostile fire. Directing his men to throw fragmentation grenades at the insurgent's position, he eventually silenced their fusillade and proceeded to land. By making three trips he was instrumental in the rescue of a great number of men. Through his timely and courageous actions, he contributed greatly to the reduction of friendly casualties. Warrant Officer Silva's personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 23d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
