Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Joel W. Sills for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near the village of Mepu, Binh Tuy Province, Republic of Vietnam on 21 March 1966. On that date, Lieutenant Sills, under intense ground fire and with complete disregard for his personal safety, directed air strikes against an opposing force which resulted in a large number of the Viet Cong killed or wounded and complete routing of the attacking force. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Sills reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
