Citation:  1.) The Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to MANARD D. SILER III: First Lieutenant Manard D. Siler III distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an Aircraft Commander near Saigon, Republic of Vietnam on 7 October 1969. On that date, Lieutenant Siler experienced an over speed of his right engine which necessitated the abortion of that engine. Because altitude and airspeed could not be maintained, Lieutenant Siler ordered the jettisoning of the load, after he had maneuvered his aircraft away from the city of Saigon to an unpopulated area. Lieutenant Siler then made a single engine landing at Ton Son Nhut Air Base. The fast and correct decisions of Lieutenant Siler enabled the safe return of the aircraft and crew. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Siler reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
