Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George Shirilla for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 6 April 1970. Captain Shirilla distinguished himself while serving as Co-pilot of an AH-1G armed helicopter during the extraction of a reconnaissance team near the Demilitarized Zone, Republic of Vietnam. The six-man reconnaissance team made contact with a numerically superior enemy force and suffered heavy casualties. Captain Shirilla answered a call for help from the survivors and halted the advancing insurgents with accurate machine gun and grenade fire. Despite a fuel shortage and adverse weather conditions, he remained in the area supporting the men on the ground until the arrival of a rescue helicopter. Captain Shirilla provided effective suppressive fire for the extraction operation and contributed greatly to the safety of the team. Captain Shirilla’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
