Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Robert M. Shine for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 10 August 1970 in the Republic of Vietnam. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commanders of troop-carrying helicopters performing combat assault missions south of Rach Sei. On the first mission into an enemy stronghold in the U Minh Forest, their aircraft were the target of the massed fires of an enemy main force unit. On the second insertion into the area, the enemy brought heavy caliber anti-aircraft machineguns to bear on the flight. Realizing that the enemy was now hard-pressed, these men unhesitatingly flew a third time through the enemy fire, ensuring the success of the mission through their selfless actions. Their outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were instrumental to the success of the mission. Their actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit, and the United States Army.
