Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Private Kenneth L. Boling for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. Private Boling distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Door Gunner of the lead ship of a twenty-helicopter formation. Although intelligence indicated that enemy activity would be heavy, no enemy contact was made on the initial insertion. However, Private Boling displayed exceptional skill in clearing and assisting the Aircraft Commander in and out of the hazardous terrain. On the second assault, the flight ship began receiving heavy automatic weapons fire from a well-armed and entrenched enemy. Private Boling returned the fire with such accuracy that the fire began to subside and enabled the Aircraft Commander to continue landing procedures. As the helicopter came to a hover over the landing zone, the fire became extremely intense. Private Boling continued to fire and clear the aircraft down through smoke and around trees. As the insertion force began to exit, the fire began to hit the ship from all directions. As the last member of the force departed the Crew Chief was reported as being hit. Without hesitation, Private Boling made his way to the other side of the aircraft and began to administer first aid. As the fire intensified, Private Boling used his body to shield his wounded comrade. The aircraft received several hits and was required to make a forced landing. As the aircraft crash-landed into a sand bar, Private Boling immediately assisted the Crew Chief and crew away from the downed ship and aided in establishing a defensive position. Private Boling's courageous actions and heroic deeds are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
